While travelling around on Vancouver Island and the Canadian Gulf Islands I had my trusty 1981 Pentax ME-Super 35mm film camera with me. It’s an old classic with a few quirks, and the Asahi Pentax 50mm F1:1.7 lens has a beautiful quality to it.

When shooting with this camera a kind of lightness comes over me. I don’t feel the need to take technically excellent shots, I simply shoot for the love of it.

I’ve just received a batch of 5 rolls of 36 from the lab. The photos are stunning. I’ll hopefully be making a few more posts in this series of which this post, Retro Canada: Water, is the first.

A Hike

Amongst the rolls of film I rediscovered recently were these photos from a hike on the mountain (Hill, for those of you from the Cape) above Hartbeespoort that I went on many, many moons ago. I quite like how so many of them turned out really old and antique looking. I guess that’s what expired film is for.

Gnarly Tree

Just a quick one today…

I discovered a whole load of old exposed negatives at the back of my fridge and took them for development. This tree is from one of those rolls, and if I remember correctly the film was already long expired by the time I took this shot.

I love the DOF and odd colouring in this one.

Beaches of Beline

While I was going through my collection of photos taken with the Pentax ME-Super searching for sunset photos I found all these photos taken during December 2009 and January 2010 in the small town of Beline, on the Mozambique coast, just north of Maputo.

Now that I’ve been shooting almost exclusively with digital again I’m really taken with the grainy, imperfect but still quite beautiful look my trusty old Pentax gives to shots. I’ve been trying to emulate this style with my digital shots, but it’s nearly impossible.
